This book, though short touches on African, Caribbean, South American, Arab, Jewish and European history in a way that many college electives, undergraduate programs and most k-12 curriculums would never mention. Only through personal research can I say I was aware of most of the facts in this work. However, the lessons therein grabbed hold of my heart. Dr. Clarke writes in an unapologetic, firm manner to drive home a point to displaced Africans and Africans at home. We can change this seemingly unchangeable dilemma. We, however must change our view of Africa and African people, understand we are African and understand our contributions to the world in NOT just Egypt but in Ghana, Mali, Timbuktu, the Sudan, Ethiopia, and Europe. We were in the Americas prior to 1492. The richest man to date was African, the first smelters of iron were African, The first International centers of education were in Africa and run by Africans long before Oxford and Harvard. This book should be mandatory reading in every black home in America and serve as the foundation for our self esteem. Our history was not that of savages and spear chucking monkey men who needed European saviors to keep us from destroying ourselves. We were not formed through the fires of slavery and Jim Crow and should not be content in praising those Africans in America who were the first to be fully accepted into European institutions. We had our own, many times over, and can have them again.

Great read. Intelligently written in a way that makes reading this book cohesive and enjoyable. I respect Ivan Van Sertima, but at times his diction is at a such a high level, you'll be forced to crack open the dictionary on every page. John Henrick Clarke breaks things down in simpler and practical terms. Recommended reading for all people that have no clue of history outside of high-school and college text books.

John H. Clarke has absolutely outdone himself with this work. He appropriately addresses the critical issues that many enlightened and informed African Americans have raised concerning the scandal of "Columbus Day". He astutely highlights the origins of racism in America. Every person should have this in their personal library.

GREAT BOOK !! highly recommend this as read to offer a different historical perspective on the african slave trade and the effect of Christopher Columbus. Dr. Clarke is a world renowned scholar and author and does a great job of capturing the essence of the important key pieces to the african genocide.

Recommend as a textbook for history classes for 7th grade & higher. Another view point on who discovered America and who visited and later invaded America.

I liked the title, and the idea of examining and revealing the true racist and genocide nature of the monster Christopher Columbus and what he represented about European Imperial expansion. But unfortunately the book is one of the most poorly written and publish books I've ever seen. It's worse written than the delusional manuscripts of sad depressed schizophrenic's that I would see from time to time in my psychotherapy practice. In spite of how deeply important these scrambled together documents were, of course no one would publishing much less read them. And this book which was published and I tried to read was not much better. The facts in the ideas and the emotional anger was all there, but it was scrambled together repetitiously with no structure. I could only guess that the author browbeat somebody into getting the book published, angrily fending off any of the helpful criticisms he undoubtedly got, until they eventually just gave in and said let's put a cover on it. As a resource for someone who wants to check on whether they're aware or need to create a list of Christopher Columbus's political crimes, this book might be a value. Otherwise I worry it will turn more people off to the reality that it will educate.

This book seems to be well written, but repeats the author's main premise over & over - in almost every chapter! The value of the information given is diminished by the fact that the author seems to NEED to repeat his main underlying accusation constantly enough that I for one began to wonder if the information given was really true because the accusation was the more important point from the author's point of view. If you're interested in this area of history, you could do a whole lot better by purchasing a different, more accepted book on the subject. At the same time, I am concerned that a significant portion of the negative reviews seem to border on being racist either by overt statements or by the level of vitriol in the comments. I wonder what proportion of the favorable reviews were favorable for race reasons, just as I am concerned about the negative reviews for race reasons. Race of the reader should not come into account when deciding whether a book is good or not!!!!!

Riveting. I found this book to be very informative. I have the books by Eric Williams that the author referred to.Eric Williams contends that the European financial system was built on the backs of black slaves. I am unlearning the myths that I was taught as a child.
