This is a very informative book that gets right down to the technical details. It has lots of illustrations, but plenty of descriptive and math-oriented information/techniques as well. It's a bit much if you are building a doghouse, I suppose. But if you are seriously looking to build a house as an owner/contractor, this will help get you going.I'm not sure why this book is out of print... perhaps the building industry didn't want you to work on your own home and rather, pay a contractor big bucks for doing things you could have done yourself if you are good with your hands and good at visualizing and understanding building geometry... and have a book like this.
Well, the term 'ultimate guide...' could be a bit missleading. While the book is laid out well, it covers some pretty mundane and pedestrian aspects of construction. Many will find the tools and their use section handy. For me, been there... I was hoping for a book that covered a myriad of framing types and how to deal with special framing situations. All this book covers are the raw basics.I don't need a section showing me how to install locksets, another section about ladders, and others covering measuring, and cutting plywood. The short section on window installation is lacking on particular issues and problems surrounding these installations. This is very often where a lot of air can penetrate a home, as well as moisture. The 'look inside' feature is no help here. It does not represent or demonstrate the actual level of information you get throughout the book. For me, about 1/3 of this book is useful, and then only on a very basic level. And I already have this info in other books. So if you know little or nothing about framing, want to try some simple projects on your own, then by all means buy this book. It will get you started. This would be a great beginners book. If you're looking for a book with comprehensive knowlege to enlighten you, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
Before I used to think building a house was impossible. I had no idea what went into it. It seemed much too difficult or complicated for me. This book has helped open what before seemed like a black box.The book is chock-full with pictures. It starts with safety suggestions, tells you what tools you'll need, talks about some engineering basics and goes into great detail on floors, walls and different kinds of roofs. There are additional sections on stairs, basements and bay windows. If you're new to framing and want to build your own home, or at least understand how a lot of it works, you will enjoy this book.
I bought this book after reading the reviews and noticed a spread of reviews from negative to positive. I would have to agree with all of them this book is not for someone who has years and years of experience. In the description is says "...leads homeowners..." not contractors or professional carpenters. So maybe the people who gave it negative reviews based on not having specific engineering technical aspects should have read the intro from the author.I really liked the diagrams for all aspects of the building process. I bought this book specifically for doing some interior framing. I also liked the section on shed dormers and how to frame them. Overall this is a great book for HOMEOWNERS looking to gain intro to intermediate knowledge on how things are put together and why.Great book!!! I bought mine used and consider $9 well worth the knowledge it provides, much better than trying to watch snippets from YouTube.
"Ultimate Guide to House Framing, 3rd edition" is a well written reference manual for how to frame a house or garage.Well written - If you plan to do any building a must own. What I liked:-1/3 of the entire book is diagrams showing "how" to.-book covers many different types of framing, and shows several different techniques.-It points out where you should consult your local building codes to see if certain items apply ( i.e. do you need hurricane straps)-well organized into logical chapters.-A high emphasis is placed on safety and the proper use of power tools.-The author take the time to explain the basics and tell you how to do thing properly. What I didn't like.- nothing.
I am a neophyte when it comes to framing and this book was great for me. It is very straightforward, simple, and direct in its explanations and the pictures are very helpful in telling the story. I found it to be a great introduction to the concepts of framing and I did not find myself confused at any point when reading through the book. Definitely great for people like me who want to learn more about how to frame.
I had looked at several books on framing before ordering this book and another. I am handy and been involved in some repairs and remolding in the past. The current project is a large ground up multi-floor workshop area. While my area has no building code I want to go with generally accepted building practices. This book covers most areas extremely well. The pictures and diagrams are very clear and easy to understand.
Useful for me. I am a nail-pounder NOT carpenter. My biggest difficulty in wood butchery is visualizing the finished product.I'm told all good carpenters can do this feat; I have yet to gain this expertise. The book helps me by taking the lead in "what to do next".
